Recommendations For Moving With Kids

Recommendations for moving with kids prior to, throughout, and after the move – provided by Sonny Solomon at The Keyes Company

November 6, 2014 //  by Sonny Solomon

Moving is often a stressful change, especially for children. To help the family cope with the change, there are many things that you can do preceding, amidst, and proceeding the big day. This article contains recommendations for moving with kids.

In Advance of the Move

Problems start long before the big day. This is when communication is essential. Make sure kids know what is going on. Build some excitement by allowing them to help with planning. Mention all of the wonderful aspects of the move as opposed to people they are leaving behind.

On Moving Day

Change is difficult for everyone. As difficult as it may be, try to remain positive. Your attitude has a big influence on your kids and their reactions. Below are a few other things you may do during the move.

Familiarity – During the transition, be sure to set aside familiar toys rather than making kids wait for the moving truck to arrive and everything to be unloaded. Those special items will minimize distress.

Routine Tasks – Moving may momentarily disturb daily habits. Do your best to maintain routines such as bedtimes, meals, and other activities.

Create an Adventure – Make the transition fun by doing things like having a camp out in the house before the furniture arrives. This is fun for the children and may be comforting to have parents and kids together during the first night in a new home.

After the Move

Oftentimes distractions are the key to reducing stress. Try to do several fun things in your new home. This creates wonderful memories. Here are some ideas.

Movie Night – Getting together for a favorite movie can make your new home feel familiar.

Explore the Area – Most families have a preferred restaurant or store. Find new places to visit around the new home. Even better, find amenities that were not available in the old neighborhood. It will make the new home seem extra special.

Make the Space Personal – Most homes could use some decorating, so allow your kids to get involved. Younger kids can pick colors and accessories and older kids can get their hands dirty. Their input will give them some pride in their new space.

Additional Recommendations For Moving With Kids

Keep in mind that kids will be down or grumpy. Give them a little leeway when they act out knowing that they will require time to grapple with the move. Establish open communication so they feel encouraged to express their worries. This also provides you with an opportunity to assist them through it. Attempt the recommendations for moving with kids above and look for other fun activities to do with your kids.
