Tips On Comparing Carpeting Products

Tips on comparing carpeting products – helpful tips for first time buyers.

February 12, 2016 //  by Sonny Solomon

When comparing carpet materials, you may be surprised at how many options are on the market. Each has different features. The fiber that you choose may depend on the particular space that it will be installed. Here are a few tips on comparing carpeting products.

Carpeting Materials

Polypropylene/Olefin

Polypropylene carpet, also referred to as olefin, is ideal for well traveled areas. It is resistant to moisture, fading, stains, and static. However, it is prone to crushing when used under heavy furniture. Its moisture resistance makes it a good choice for finished basements, entrances, and exterior spaces such as patios.

Acrylic

Acrylic material is made of synthetic fiber and is sometimes mixed with wool to produce a softer texture. It is moisture and fade resistant, and because of that is great for spaces that contain moisture or sunlight. Acrylic is often selected for sun rooms or basement rooms.

Polyester

Polyester is also synthetic. It can be made from recycled materials and is thus an environmentally friendly than other products. It is also plush, retains its color, and resists staining. This is a great pick for rooms to create a cozy feel. Given that it is quite plush, it is better fitting for less traveled spaces.

Nylon

Nylon is a very commonly found fiber. It is synthetic and repels stains and holds its shape. It is also offered in a wide range of colors. Because of its resiliency, nylon is a great alternative for high-traffic zones. It comes in a wide range of price points an may therefore be a low cost choice too.

Wool

Being a natural material, wool is durable, supple, and healthy. It can actually reduce pollutants in the air. It is offered in a wide range of colors because it is easy to dye, but that also means it may stain quickly. It is also a more expensive alternative

Tips On Comparing Carpeting Products

Clearly, there are many different elements of a space to think about before selecting carpeting material. Some materials are more durable and better for busy spaces. Stain resistance is important for areas prone to food spills and mud. Some fibers retain their structure better than others, which may be important based on the carpet pattern or furniture in the room. You may find that some colors, patterns, and other design elements are available only in certain fibers. Lastly, environmental impact may also be a consideration. The tips on comparing carpeting products above will help you choose a carpet that best suits the space and will last for a long time.
